Gifts of Summer

Our first tomato and cucumber harvest from the garden. I'm celebrating tomato day! Not everyone in our neighborhood is so lucky. A neighbor told me they went to bed one night and got up the next morning to discover every green tomato and bloom eaten off their tomato plants. Deer? Wild turkey? They aren't sure which, but I am hoping those critters don't discover there is an all-you-can-eat buffet at our house. I have my heart set on a couple of months of tomato sandwiches, tomatoes and cottage cheese, and just plain tomato slices with salt and pepper.

I can remember being sick as a kid, and Mom trying to find something that could tempt me to eat. The only thing that I wanted was a tomato and bacon sandwich. In the early 60's during the winter months, the only tomatoes were pink, anemic versions of what came from our summer garden. They cost an arm and a leg out of a season, but Mom would splurge and buy one or two to make my favorite sandwich. I still crave tomatoes from time to time. Sometimes your body just knows what it needs.

Elk, we claim that as our street, even though our drive is about 20 yards off of this street.

How great! Our tomato plants don't even have flowers yet. We have to plant them in a garden with a high fence so the deer don't eat our entire garden. I love tomato sandwiches made with homegrown tomatoes! Enjoy your first harvest!

Thank you for joining Monday Memories!

Heidi-
Our whole town used to have great big trees like that. Now our street is the only one that looks the same since the tornado. At least we have one street!!

I am envious that you are able to grow such great specimens - my attempts have been fruitless (if you will pardon the pun).
