Going Batty

About 7 or 8 years ago a neighbor tore down an old barn just to the east of our house across the road a bit. The bats that inhabited that old barn evidently took a look around the neighborhood and decided our house looked inviting. We've battled bats in our attic ever since.

A couple years ago, we thought we had the problem nipped in the bud. No such luck. After screening in our attic vents, we even had to take the shutters off because the bats were locating there. Then the tornado hit.

The Mr. is convinced that we had a bat on our roof in a top hat, smoking a cigar, and welcoming all the displaced bats in town to our abode. The noise in our attic got a bit ridiculous this summer. Finally, the professionals have been called in. (In fact, the closest company we could find to do the job is 3 hours away.) We now have two funnels on our house which makes it possible for the bats to exit, but not re-enter. These funnels will stay up for a week or two, and then the company will make certain after the funnels are removed that the bats can't get back in.

After our early morning walk this morning, our yard looked like a WWII movie with fighter pilots swooping in and dive bombing. Actually, the bats were trying to figure out a way back in. Our house would make a great Halloween Haunted House right now.

Don't bother to tell me how great bats are for keeping down the bug/mosquito population. I know that. I also know that I don't need them smelling up my attic or leaving their calling cards.

Anyway, if you'd like a few free bats--let me know. I'll gladly give you all of mine!

I feel the puns coming on! : ) That may be the only humor that I find in this situation!

I know that bats are one of God creatures and all that, but they give me the willy's and they are gross. They fly around outside when we water the lawn. Argh. The top hat part was hilarious. I bet the one in the top hat (the leader) is all, waving his hand saying- come to me my people. All Godfatherish like.

I love how you ended it with telling people not to bother telling you about the positives of bats! I imagine that it's much easier to laud them when they live in someone else's house and much harder when they are in your own :)

I'm with you. Who wants a bunch of animals living in their attic smelling the place up. That can't be healthy. Good luck! Keep us updated on your batty situation.
