A little bit of mourning going on in Easy Street world. To Kill A Mockingbird is my favorite book. We're studying it right now. And while I was teaching it today, our librarian sent us the news of Harper Lee's death. I almost started crying.
So tonight, I am sharing some of my favorite quotes:
"You never really understand a man until you consider things from his point of view-- until you climb into his skin and walk around in it."
"He was really nice--most people are when you finally see them."
"Before I can live with other folks, I've got to live with myself."
"The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience."
"God is loving other folks like you do yourself."
"We're paying the highest tribute we can pay a man. We trust him to do right. It's that simple."
"Aunt Alexandra was analogous to Mount Everest-- cold and there."
"Pass the damn ham."
"Just standing on the Radley front porch was enough."
"Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved reading. One does not love breathing."
"I wanted you to see what real courage is instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun. It's when you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what."
"There's just one kind of folks-- folks."
"They could never, never understand that I live the way I do because that's the way I want to live."
