Year 2- More Adjustments

Yesterday, I looked at the feet. The kids seem to have adjusted to all the walking--rain or shine. The other big adjustment for the students is not having lockers. They seem to have adjusted there, too. The only solution? Backpacks, lots and lots of backpacks! The backpack companies did a boom business with our high school. And like the rain boots, the backpacks have become a bit of a fashion statement, too.
Unlike college, where you may only need three or four books a day, our students haul every book and notebook for 7 classes every day. (And some backpacks hold a change of clothes for athletic practices, too!) I have no idea how much the average backpack weighs, but they are heavy!
Some of the packs are about as big as the kids carrying them! (My 2nd hour girls agreed to line up for a backpack picture.) I figure the choirpractors of our community are going to get a boost in business. Our students walk quite a few blocks every day with their entire world on their back.
So all those backpacks end up clogging the aisles of our already crowded trailers. We tread carefully when we walk around our rooms. (Sometimes it is easier to stay put!)
When I break my neck someday, you'll know why! I was probably trying to hand back tests, got in a fight with the backpacks, and the backpacks won!

I always feel that the backpacks are too heavy.

You would have to be so careful not to trip over them. I do love backpacks though - they fit everything in. I am a fan of pockets and there are just so many in a good backpack.

No lockers?! I would have died in HS. I vividly remember the books being heavier than me.

No lockers. Amazing the things you miss when a tornado takes your school. Hopefully, the new school will be up with a year or so!

Last year I kept nagging at my son to use his locker so he wouldn't have to haul his book everywhere. We'll see how this year goes....but they only have 4 classes. But I must say...that's a good way of keeping the kids in their seats....for fear of being tripped & totally embarrassing themselves. (Now if a teacher did it, they would pee themselves laughing, wouldn't they?)

Wow, those poor kids! Of course that's nothing compared to having to walk to school in the four feet of snow up hill both ways.

Our public school here banned backpacks. They really did. The kids at the high school may not carry backpacks around the school. They have to return to their lockers between each class and get the books they need. It was for safety and back health- somebody deemed the packs too healthy for teenaged backs.

I realize you don't have lockers, though. These packs make nice pictures.

Those are some very pretty backpacks! I hope your new school is finished ahead of schedule, under budget!

Love the pictures and the captions. It's great how kids adapt to situations. Those bp's must be heavy though.

You all will enjoy your new school.
