Saturday's List- My Mom Was The Best

In honor of Mother's Day, this week's list is about my mom.

*My mom was the kindest person I've ever known.  Period.

*She believed in "killing people with kindness."  The meaner they were; the kinder you were to be.  It wasn't always easy, but I use that in teaching more than all the Ed Psych they taught me in college.

*"Pretty is as pretty does."  She didn't care what I looked like, but she certainly cared how I behaved.

*She was a master at guilt trips!

*I can't even begin to know how much she sacrificed for all of us kids.  I know she did without a lot. I remember her wearing the same winter coat for years.

*We kids always came first.  And we knew that.  Causing Mom to worry or be upset was about the worst thing we could do.

*Mom was a reader and a musician.  All of her kids are readers and musicians.  She led by example.

*She was good at making each of us feel special.

*Mom didn't learn to sew, but she made sure that my sister and I both learned.  And to make our sewing a bit easier, she was always willing to use a seam ripper to take out our messes.  (I've never enjoyed sewing as much without her help!)

*She loved holidays and always made them special.  We had a lot of traditions.  Most of those traditions were part of her childhood, and now those traditions are part of our family.  The links in the chain continue.

*When Mom and I graduated from college together, she refused to walk.  She said that none of her other kids had to share their graduations, and she wasn't going to take away from mine.  Even begging didn't help.

*No mom could possibly be prouder of her kids than Mom was.  She was our biggest fan and best cheerleader.

*Mom spent her life protecting us.  And she protected us to the end.  She didn't die until about 30 minutes after the last of us kids had left the hospital.  In some way, even unconcious, she was protecting us from her death.  She was a mother to the end.

I know I'm biased, but I don't think they don't come much better.

I could've written that list except for a couple of things:
My mom sewed a lot. The item about your mom not walking for graduation made me tear up! What a special lady she must have been!
I'm very fortunate to still have my mom with me, but I realize it may not be for very much longer.
Happy Mother's Day!

She sounds so much like my own mother, except my mother didn't get to fulfill her dream of a college degree. But she willed herself to live until both her daughter and granddaughter got theirs---two of the happiest, proudest days of her life!
How are you feeling?
