Week 30- Gardens

Fire escape gardens in pots are the norm for New York City.  In the country, vegetable gardens abound.  It is dry and incredibly hot this summer, and in spite of that-- the son-in-law has tomato plants that are over seven feet tall.  You can't tell it from the photo, but the white buckets are about a foot tall, so that should give you some perspective. I've been enjoying some of the fruits of his labor!

Too Long, Week 27: Signs of Summer

A year ago, a former student and I  began a weekly photo blog of her life in New York City and my life in the heart of the Midwest.  Our photos centered around a theme.  We had a lot of fun getting a glimpse into the other's world. Then, for a variety of reasons, we quit at week 27.

We decided to start again right where we are...at the start of our summer.  So here is a glimpse of summer from Metropolitan Magic and Country Charm.  We've just finished harvest in the country, and the city has enjoyed their Mermaid Parade at Coney Island Beach.

We're Baack!!

For several months now, Metropolitan Magic and Country Charm have been missing.  Alicia at A NYC Life has been in desperate need of a break after leaving one stressful job and before beginning a new teaching job in Harlem. It sounds like this job is a much better fit.  Life has been hectic on Easy Street, too.  Sometime I'll fill you in on why my blogging and reading of blogs is so sporadic. Together, we just haven't been able to touch base very often.

So belatedly...here is a shot of Street Vendors: easy for Alicia to find and a bit more challenging in small town America!

I had a busy weekend, and hopefully I will find time to share some fun this week!  In the meantime, have a great week!  I'm heading out to torture sophomores with the changing of our English Language during the Middle English period.  Yeah, I'm sure they can't wait!

Week 26- Music

I think that Alicia probably had an easier time with this week's photo.  NYC has a lot of street musicians during every season of the year.  That makes me a little jealous!

The Midwest has concerts, but in our small town-- street musicians would be performing for trees and dogs.  Almost every town has a band shell or an equivalant, and summer concerts are a part of almost every community.

Week 25- Where Our Feet Take Us

Alicia and I decided to do a photo of where our feet take us in each of our locales.  While her's is of trash after a Mermaid Parade at Coney Island, mine is of wading in the creek in this hot weather.  In typical fashion, we both happened to be wearing black flip flops. (Are we in sync or what?!)

Week 24- Sunrises

I have been battling stormy, cloudy weather here in the Midwest.  Getting any kind of shot of the sunrise (which is usually BEAUTIFUL!) has been challenging...there hasn't been one!  Alicia was sweating it on her end, too--until she realized that she sees the sunrise on her way to work every day.  (The poor dear is still in school!)  Her photo is taken from a subway platform.  You can't tell, but mine is taken from the cemetery.  A little irony there, I guess.

Week 23- Signs of Summer

Blogger went down last night and has been down all morning.  I couldn't even edit today's post, and since I'd already set it to publish this morning at 5:00--well, it just didn't get edited.  Oh well.

This week our photo assignment was to take pictures of "the signs of summer."  Alicia and I often seem to be on the same wavelength.  We both took pictures of mothers with their children, playing in water.  While the pool scene is typical midwest, playing in the fire hydrants is totally NYC.

So here they are...signs of summer!

Week 22- Long Weekend

Alicia and I both took pictures over our long Memorial Weekend. She was obviously at the beach on her long weekend.  I wrote about the family camping trip which for me always includes a visit to the little cemetery where my mom was buried.

Week 21- 100 steps

I'm a week late.  Alicia and I have had quite the week.  I was sick at the beginning of last week, and so was she.  (And I don't think it was because she still has a month of school to go! Poor thing.)  Then we were both gone over the weekend.  So operating on the better late than never theory, here is last week's photo.  We were to walk 100 steps from our front door and photograph whatever was there.  One hundred steps put me right on the edge of my neighbor's backyard.  Looks like it put Alicia at the NYC equivilant of a yard, too!

Week 19- Landmarks

This week is definitely a study in contrasts!!  The landmarks for NYC and the country are so different.  No problem figuring out which is which!

Week 13- People

Coffee is my language.  I took the photo of this guy at the local coffee shop visiting with the men who gather every morning.  Alicia caught this girl outside the coffee shop in NYC, visiting with her friends in the modern way!
