Easy Street is still having computer problems. Our wireless is on the blink--literally. We're on. We're off. We're on. We're off. Hopefully, we will get the darn thing figured out early next week.
Let's see. The Mr. is at an RV show out of town this weekend. (He has been since Wednesday.) He is home to sleep and that is about it.
Oh, and I burned my cheek with my curling iron. It isn't bad, but looks quite lovely. (I haven't used a curling iron in years--and now I may never again.)
The Mr.'s cousin is in the hospital. She is quite sick with a bacterial infection that isn't responding to the antibiotics that they have tried so far. They've brought in specialists. Poor thing. She is 60 or so and this is her first time in the hospital since she was born. I usually go visit them during RV show weekend. We take in a movie at one of my favorite theaters. (They deliver wine to your seat!) The poor cousin is so sick that she doesn't even want company in the hospital. We'll have to plan a trip for another weekend. I'm hoping the cousin bounces quickly.
On a good note, I did babysit the Bug for a couple of hours last night. It is so much fun when she giggles with joy when she sees me! Love that little girl!
I wouldn't count on regular blogging any time soon. It doesn't seem to be in the cards. On the upside, I should get a lot of work done on the next show. Auditions are Tuesday and Wednesday. There is plenty to do.
I could use some luck about right now, but you know theater people. And if you tell me to break a leg, I probably would. Send good thoughts, OK?

Life Lessons
Sometimes I get so busy I forget to slow down and enjoy. Things get crazy. I can't find the time to do the things I "want" to do because I have too many "have" to dos.
And then something hits me right between the eyes.
I haven't had time to do a lot of things lately. I owe phone calls. I haven't read a newspaper all the way through in weeks. I'm behind on a lot of blogs that I normally read on a daily basis. I might get a blog or two read here and there, but that's about it.
A little over a week ago, I went on Vodka Mom's blog. She is an elementary school teacher with great tales to tell. She makes me laugh out loud. My Exploring Teaching as a Career class is full of students who want to major in elementary education. I visit her blog for stories to tell, and she never disappoints.
That day I went to her blog, she mentioned another blog. When I hit the link, I happened on a blog I will never forget: An Inch of Gray. I knew the state of Virginia had torrential rains. Crazy Cousin Ree had written about it on facebook, but here was a family who had lost their adorable 12 year old son in the floodwater. The mom, a regular blogger, had written about what had to be the worst day of her life. I couldn't quit reading her blog. I went back and read her old posts. Everything was so normal in her life, and then: tragedy.
Life is hectic. It's good. It's crazy. And it isn't always easy. In spite of the stress, I've got it pretty good right now. I usually remember that, but should I forget--Anna's blog reminds me once more.
"We're all in the same boat on a stormy sea, and we owe each other a terrible loyalty."

Did, Didn't, and Randoms
These are the things I didn't get done this weekend:
*Take a picture for Country Charm
*Catch up on blog reading (I am soooo far behind.)
*Get little sis called for a nice, long chat
*Purchase new running shoes
I did:
*Lunch with K & L and K's friend J and her mom and sis. J and K are both having babies, and baby showers got planned for them on the same day. Since J lives in Chicago, we wanted to see her even if we had to miss her shower. It was fun to catch up.
*Attend an adorable baby shower for K here in Tiny Town. It was such a nice gathering of friends, and everything was just lovely: decorations, yummy cupcakes, and such a creative game. The hostesses really made it a special afternoon for K and the Lady Bug. With every little outfit, toy, or nursery item, her birth seems that much closer. I am getting so excited!
*CT and K had us, along with CT's parents, for lunch on Sunday. He grilled chicken and corn on the cob. His mom made Eggplant Parmesan. It was an amazing lunch. CT and his folks had spent all day Saturday canning salsa. (With 30 tomato plants, CT has plenty of tomatoes to work with!) Y-UM!
And now a few randoms:
*Last fall right before K and CT's wedding reception, I dropped a lamp that looks like the old-fashioned street lamp post. It landed square on the nail bed of my big toe. The bruised part of the nail has grown out. Now, I'm waiting for the damaged nail to finally grow out. Eleven months and counting.
*Baxter's love affair with yard sprinklers continues. It is great fun to watch him roll in the sprinklers or try to drink from them. He sat on one the other day--and he seemed to like it! Weird!
*I am a vivid dreamer. Crazy dreams. Sometimes my dreams make me laugh, and sometimes I scare myself. The latest dream was about a stormy evening with about 20 funnel clouds on the horizon. It took me a bit to calm down after that one.
*Finally, L and I purchased swim caps. Yes, I am going to be the nerd in a swim cap at the J-town Y. And L is going to be the nerd at the 24 Hour Fitness Center in Big City. The only good thing is that at 4:30 AM, very few people will see me! And I'm pretty sure I won't be posting any pictures of this look!
They are predicting temperatures around 110 this week. Help me! I'm melting.....!

Only Wednesday
Finally, the phone and the internet are both working. We'll see how long that lasts. Last time, we made it three weeks. Three whole weeks.
Let's see...
Another cousin, the cousin exactly one week older than I am, left me a box of goodies at the RV Park. One Week Older's husband works at an office supply store and had a bunch of teacher give-away bags and lesson plan books from last year. He donated to them to me, and I am excited to use them with my teaching class this next school year. The lesson plan books aren't dated, so it doesn't really matter. The students are going to love them!
One Week Older also included some rival University three-ring binders. They have a strange looking chicken on them. *sigh* I will probably be able to find some students who will count them among their most valuable possessions. *double sigh* Yeah, they will love them. Actually, pretty cool that One Week Older Cousin thought of me. She is a doll!
After working at the pool yesterday, I met with the teacher who will be building and helping design the set for the Tiny Town High School musical this fall. It all seems a bit overwhelming to me, but it is good to have help.
I finished Firefly Lane by Kristen Hannah. I'm struggling with Little Bee. I'm half-way through and depressed as H-E-double hockey sticks. I want to like it, but in an odd way it is reminding me of the movie "The Piano." I know that movie won all kinds of awards, but I hated it. I like serious books. BUT... I like serious books with a happy ending or at least a "restore my faith in the goodness of people" ending. I don't see Little Bee headed there. I'm stalling.
While stalling, I am re-reading the 7th Harry Potter book before the movie comes out. I'm also starting The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. I don't usually read two books at once, but now I'm thinking of reading three at once. My ADHD is kicking in. Oh, wait a second-- make that four books. I've been reading the nonfiction Dave Ramsey book, too. His financial advice makes a lot of sense.
I bet you can tell that my allergies went into overtime this past weekend. Combine that with a terrible stomach ache and no internet, and I had plenty of time for reading. However, now that I am feeling better and the internet is working, I probably should do something besides cleaning the RV pool and reading.

Last Day
Blogger is driving me crazy. I am having trouble accessing my dashboard; hence, it is almost impossible to post.
When I can finally get on my dashboard, everything looks a bit strange: bold font and semi broken looking bullets.
I don't really need this right now. I'm finishing up at school. Today is the last day.
The family Woodstock Weekend begins on Friday. I'm trying to organize the house before I leave, so I can enjoy the weekend--guilt free.
My kid sister and all of her family will be joining us this year. Little sis + brother-in-law + 4 daughters + 2 husbands +1 granddaughter = the California crew. I can't wait to see them!
In fact, I think all of my siblings will be here. That doesn't happen very often these days. Add in all the CraZy relatives who will be camping at my grandparent's farm this weekend and let the fun begin!
I am more than ready for today to be over, more than ready for a long weekend, and more than ready for summer.
Seeing all of the tornado damage in other places, a friend retiring, and the husband going back to work full time before he was supposed to have all added to the end of the year "fun." I am more than ready for the down time.

Simple Blog Rules
Easy Street's Blog Guidelines-
1. I don't use names. Not family names, state, or town name. Not that someone couldn't figure it out, but I try hard to keep it somewhat anonymous. VodkaMom taught me this. About a month after I discovered her blog, she deleted every post. She was in pretty serious trouble with her school. I'd like to NOT be in that situation. Ever. (By the way-- she's back now and much more cautious! She shares her story as a warning to other bloggers.)
2. Because I try to keep it anonymous, if you comment using my name, town, or state-- I will usually reject it. I guess this is protecting the innocent or not-so-innocent. (For certain, it is my attempt to protect the students that I sometimes photograph.) So that is why you'll see nicknames like Tiny Town, Trailer High, the Mr., K, and L.
3. One of the downsides of this is when things happen that I can't fully share. A good example:
An award winning author sat in on K's class this week, watched her teach, and spent some time interviewing her for an article that he is writing on character education for a well-known magazine. Her school and class will be photographed and featured. Pretty exciting, except for the fact that I can't really share all the details. Bummer.
4. I appreciate when former students and relatives comment and use abbreviations for their names, too. (Though you should see me struggle to figure out who it is sometimes!! The wheels are a-turning!!)
5. If you ever see photos with strange smears, that means I retouched it to remove an identifying name.
OK. I'm pretty sure that is more than you needed to know about my blogging, but maybe those guidelines will help some other blogger.

A Whole Lot Of New
I feel like I am a whole new woman! Well, at least a woman with a new blog look!
My birthday present was a blog makeover from Design Girl. It took a bit of time and effort to figure out what I wanted. And then it took poor Design Girl a few (OK. Twenty!) emails to get things like I wanted them to be. You're looking at the results--so this is my whole new blog world.

Coming Soon
Good Friday. No school for me today. No work for the Mr. either. And Mr. B let us sleep in until 8:00. Woo hoo! Of course, that means I am slow getting a post up today. I should have done it last night, but I have a good reason for missing.
One of my birthday presents is a blog makeover/redesign by Design Girl. I was excited until I realized how many decisions I had to make that I would have to live with for a year or so. I am a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants kind of girl. If I don't like something, I'll change it. I tend to evolve as I go. And now I have to decide on colors, themes, and any special features that I want to have her include. Scary!
My major problem came when I tried to pin down exactly what this blog is about. I'm not sure she designs for a blog about...well, nothing! The blog name "Easy Street" isn't all that helpful either. I chose that name for my small town, for the leisure I enjoy, and even for the fact that it is pretty much all inclusive: anything goes! And frequently, that is what I post about-- darn near anything.
It is easier to list what this blog is not about: fashion, cooking (God forbid!), crafting, parenting, politics, or health.
See my problem? So I tried to look at what I write about: school, teaching, small town life, our tornado, the Mr., the girls, my stroke, and now Baxter the Shih Poo Pup. OK. And what do I love? Books, writing, coffee, music, champagne, biking, movies, and teenagers. *sigh* I am getting nowhere.
Design Girl has her work cut out for her. See all that random nothingness above? Yep. I just sent it to her. Now, I am pouring through photos to find pictures of my beloved Midwest, the neighborhood, and the family.
Redesigning my blog means no time for blogging. Now that is a conundrum isn't it?
The redesign is supposed to take about 3 to 4 weeks. Care to put any money on that? Poor Design Girl.

Blog Land
I have been mulling this over in my mind for a few weeks now. Technology is both amazing and scary at times. Seems we all know the scary part, but for the last year I have become much more aware of the perks of technology.
After the tornado I created two groups on Facebook. One was for the alumni so that they would know what had been rescued and what was happening with rebuilding plans. The other was for current students, so they would know what to expect when school started. The students were the ones that quickly decided that it would be a "badge of honor" to stick with our school even though it was now a trailer school. At the very least, they knew it would be a good story to tell. There is no way I could have reached that many people without the aid of technology.
Then there is this blog. Most of the time, it is simply a blog of my life. It isn't much different than the journals that I have kept for years--kind of boring and mundane. I have been amazed at the number of people who say they read it fairly regularly. These are the "Lurky Lous." They are the ones who never comment. I wouldn't know that many family and friends read it, except they tell me in person. (One cousin nags at me if I don't post often enough.)
The people who comment or follow openly are, for the most part, strangers. Except we have developed some blog land friendships. Talk about technology connecting people! I now have "friends" of all ages from all over the country, plus a couple of foreign countries. And what have I learned? We are all so similar. Our lives are quite different, and yet we have much more in common than not. It has surprised me.
What have I gained?

- I have learned that blogland is a terrific teaching tool. I have a former student with a Down Syndrome baby, and when I read her blog I realize how much help and shared advice she gets from other parents of Down Syndrome kids. (I also realize what an amazing mother she is.) If you have a question and put it out there in blogland--someone will be able to help you out.
- One of my favorite artistic bloggers sponsored a contest, and I am now going to be the proud owner of one of her creations. It is in the mail. Can you imagine how excited I am?!!
- Blogs enable me to armchair travel to places I really want to visit. (I now have a list of several other states where I want to visit wineries.)
- Going through a crisis in your life? Put it on your blog and you will have people all over the country and world praying for you or sending good thoughts your way. People really do care.
- There are just a lot of good, interesting people out there. They struggle with kids, home school their children, teach in public schools, take in foreign exchange students, and travel to places I dream about. They worry, economize, and share favorite finds: recipes, knitting patterns, blogs, books, movies, decorating tips, and about a million other things. I have learned so much.
A couple of weeks ago I told you about my aunt loaning me her copy of "The Girls From Ames." I read it on vacation and really enjoyed it. That blog hadn't been up but a day or so, when I heard from one of the girls from Ames! (I'm sure she has an alert that lets her know when their book is mentioned on the internet.) She wrote to let me know she was glad I enjoyed the book. And that, my friends, is an awesome perk of writing a blog!
