Such a sweet four days with the Lady Bug.  She is so much fun.

There is something about a six month old baby.  Their personality starts to come through.

She giggles.  She peek-a-boos.  Her lower lip comes out for pouts.  She is just starting to hold on--almost like a hug.

Her hair is light and starting to stand up with a mind of its own.  Oh, and that face is so kissable!

A lot of us on Easy Street thought that face was quite sweet, including Baxter who seems to have quite a crush on the Bug.  (Don't we all?)  The feelings were quite mutual.  She'd let him lick her face, and he'd let her pull his hair.  It was a nice arrangement.

Things are strangely quiet on Easy Street today. We are missing this little bundle.
Her mommy and daddy were pretty happy to see her.  She was pretty happy to see them, too.

Getting Smarter

The second time around on the play, I've learned a bit.  The smartest thing...

When I get home from practice about 8:30-8:45, I don't even sit down.  Baxter and I go for a half hour walk around Tiny Town.  I can mull over the good and bad about practice.

Fresh air, a walk, and I'm pretty sure the whole world gets a better version of Mrs. E.

Yep.  I'm a slow learner, but this is probably a life saver.

Almost Wordless Wednesday

Not a great photo, but I had to show you the Lady Bug's biggest fan.  He's babysitting.
It seems to be a mutual admiration.

Baxter and the Christmas Tree

Poor Baxter isn't quite sure what to make of our tree.  He started out kind of fascinated with the ornaments.  He even nudged a couple off the tree. We nipped that in the bud.

Lately, he's been leaving the ornaments alone.  The tree skirt is another matter.

I could not figure out what the stupid dog was trying to do.  Bax was clear under the tree and nosing around. He would tug on the edges of the tree skirt, trying to pull it around.  I had to scold him--more than once.

And then the Mr. figured it out:  he's "burying" his bones under the tree skirt.  *sigh*

About the time he lifts his leg on the tree--he is sooo out of here!

Eye Candy

Everybody needs a little eye candy on this beautiful Friday...

Wait for it....

Wait for it....

Yes, it's BAXTER!!!   And that's a tear in Baxter's eye.  Somebody has his nose out of joint.  He's been feeling a bit left out with the Lady Bug getting all the attention.  But since the Little Bug and her parents think that they need to spend a long weekend with the other grandparents, Bax is back in the limelight.  (His favorite place to be!)

Happy Friday!  (And you can bet Lady Bug and Grandma CoCo are going to have some catching up to do next week!)

Some Days

Today's a big one!  My English students are taking their first unit test of the year.  After yesterday's review, all bets are off.  I have no idea how they will do.

As important as the unit test is, today is also Audition Day for the Fall Musical.  Yes, the directing debut is about to begin.  We'll see how this goes.  If blogging becomes erratic in the next few months, you'll know why.  Free time is going to be a luxury.

On a side note, yesterday was fairly interesting.  I arrived home from school, opened the car door, and Baxter jumped in.  Yes, our house dog, who is never outside without a leash, had spent an entire afternoon in the great outdoors.  Apparently the Mr. needs to do a better job of locking the back door after lunch.  The door was swinging wide open, and I had to do a quick sweep of the house to make sure Baxter hadn't invited any friends home.

In the next few weeks, Bax and I might have to plan to run away together.  I have a hunch I'm going to need it.  I don't know about Bax.

The Message

K handed me a mailing from the Vet called "Fido Was First."  Subtitle:  "Training Your Dog For Baby's Arrival."  I don't think she's worried about Khalie.

Baxter, she might be trying to tell you something.  I guess she'd prefer that you not chew the Lady Bug's face off during your first encounter.

These are the tips I gleaned:

*Pull the dog's tail and ears to prepare them for a toddler who will do the same.
*Have a doll baby to hold, so the dog gets used to seeing one in your arms.
*Take a blanket to the hospital to wrap the baby in.  Take it home so the dog can smell the baby before she arrives.
*Give the dog treats for sitting quietly and not going crazy.

That last one might be a challenge.  As far as I know, Baxter can't eat treats while he is sleeping!  Sitting quietly isn't really his forte!

It Has All Been A Ruse

Baxter has been faking the whole well-behaved lapdog business.

Yes, he sits on my lap and puts his head on my chest so he can gaze into my eyes.  (Sweetest thing ever!)

Oh, and he curls up on my feet and sleeps.  So cute.

He snuggles in, and we share my chair.  (Reminds me to keep running.  It is pretty crowded already.  I don't need to gain any more weight!)

Don't get me wrong.  He still runs figure 8's in our family room like a crazed cheetah.  But... Mr. B will sit on command, fetch the paper, and is great on his leash.

He's been so good that the Mr. has experimented with NOT putting Baxter in his kennel area (laundry room) when we are gone for a short time.  "He's been so well behaved."  Blah, blah, blah.  And granted, Bax has been doing this for a couple of months with great success.

We made a quick trip to J town the other night, and the Mr. wanted to leave him out in our kitchen and family room.  We were gone for about 45 minutes.

We returned home to find Baxter had torn a hole in the seat of my chair and pulled out some of the stuffing. I'm pretty sure he was eating it.  Who knows how much he consumed?

Yes, he got scolded and was put away immediately. And yes, I went to bed without talking to him.

The next morning, the Mr. said Baxter stood by the kitchen door, waiting patiently for me to come out of the bedroom.  The Mr. couldn't lure him away.  When I did stumble in, he hopped up in my lap as soon as I sat down and licked my cheek.  He didn't leave my side the entire morning.

I figure that makes him a typical male.  Gets himself into hot water and spends a lot of time kissing up and trying to get out of trouble.

While he was incredibly cute, there is still the problem of my torn chair and the loose stuffing.

I think at this point, he can consider himself lucky that I didn't have him stuffed!

Terrific Thursday

Today started with a mile run at 5:00 AM.  It was a beautiful morning in Tiny Town: cool with no wind.  Add in a bright moon and the few morning stars left, and it was one of those mornings where it felt great just to be alive!

At 6:00 Baxter and I met K and Khalie for a long walk.  K is getting to the point in her pregnancy where controlling a 70 pound black lab is a bit of a challenge.  CT bought the dogs a splitter for the leash so that I can walk the dogs, while K walks the baby.  Let me tell you, it is a workout.  Poor Bax is pretty much going wherever Khalie wants!  The sprinklers are the biggest fascination right now.  Baxter loves to lay on sprinkler heads, while Khalie mainly wants a drink.  They both end up drenched.

Last night I completed a paper I needed to write so I could get college credit for the conference I attended.  I think that might be the last college credit I will need.  I now have the hours to re-certify one more time, and I think that will take me through 2020.  I will be shocked if I teach beyond that, but I guess one never knows...!

This morning I am helping K with a project for the little lady bug's nursery.  If we get it finished, I will try to take a picture of it.

Late this afternoon, I am headed out to dinner and a movie with my service sorority sisters.  We are a group of twenty women ages 26-65 or so.  Despite the wide age range, we always have such a good time.  These women really do feel like another family. They come to our rescue when we are going through bad times, celebrate milestones and achievements, and share a wealth of knowledge.  I've enjoyed learning about shopping bargains, decorating tips, new recipes, craft projects, and good books to read.  The younger ones have shared their babies and young children with us.  (I'm not sure what we 'elders' bring to their lives!)  We've enjoyed salad suppers and wine and cheese parties.  Tonight, no one is cooking.  We're headed to a restaurant and a chick flick.

Finally, I hope to finish a book called The Maze Runner by James Dashner.  I had a freshman boy in my advisory who refused to read all year, and then he picked up this book in March.  He couldn't put it down and immediately checked out and finished the second one in the series.  I'm starting to understand the attraction.

Thankfully, I don't feel like I am running through a maze today.  On this Thursday, life is just lazy enough to be comfortable; busy enough to be productive; and fun enough to feel a bit like a holiday.  And that's a pretty terrific Thursday in my books!

Friday At Last

Today will be the first day where I have absolutely nothing to do.  We got out of school last Thursday, and I have been busy every day since:  family reunions, funerals, and the part-time job.

I'd play today, but I fear I must clean this pit of a house.  I'm calling today "dig out" day.

Highlights or lowlights of this week?

*Scout put in an appearance at the RV pool this week.  She is almost three this summer and as cute as a button!  I keep trying to convince K and CT to name baby girl T--Scout.  (Yeah, I'm thinking Atticus for their first boy doesn't stand a chance either!)

*The pool got a new hose with enough suction to pick up any spare 10 year old's in the bottom of the pool.  The suction "locks" the vacuum to the bottom of the pool, and I almost rip my arms from the sockets trying to free it.  Trust me, I won't need to work out with weights this summer.  Two hours of cleaning the pool leaves my muscles shaking.  Whew!

*I started reading the Percy Jackson series.  L is going to be teaching 5th grade, and these books are high on the list for that age group.  I thought I'd see what the younger crowd is reading.  I confess.  I am hooked, and I love all the mythology kids are exposed to in these books.

*Baxter is slowly becoming a lap dog!  I love it!  Well, I love everything except when he puts his paws on my laptop to close it or uses his paw to push my book away.  He's a bit demanding in the attention department.  Other than that, he is adorable!

Well, I've delayed long enough.  I'm going to grab a shovel and get started on the cleaning.  (I know there is furniture somewhere under all that dust!)

Mr. B

We're thinking that our four day ski vacation might have been a bit tough on Baxter.  He spent the time at a local kennel.  The kennel owner was pretty sure this was not a lifestyle choice that Baxter liked.  I can offer proof.

*Baxter has done almost nothing but sleep since he's been home.  He's obviously catching up.

*He has no voice.  None.  When he tries to bark, it just doesn't come out.  Nada.  Nothing.

Our guess is that Baxter spent his days (and nights) barking.   We're pretty sure that the other animals boarding there were quite annoyed.  The kennel doesn't furnish earplugs.  My guess is that the kennel owner and the other pets breathed a sigh of relief when he left.

Poor Baxter.  Poor spoiled little thing.

Home Again

We arrived home at 8:00 last night.  K had picked up Baxter from the kennel and deposited him at home.  He was quite happy to see us.  In fact, the lady at the kennel told K that she didn't think the kennel life was one Baxter ever wanted to be acquainted with for long.  In other words, he is a bit pampered and spoiled at home.  You think??  He jumped into my arms for some snuggling when we arrived home.  Sheer relief on that little face!

The first half of Spring Break has been wonderful.  The last half will be a bit full, too--but all things I am eagerly anticipating:  a haircut and pedicure, a niece's play, and a class reunion.

But...I don't want to forget all the great things about this trip:

*The slopes weren't crowded.

*I didn't have to wait in a single lift line.

*There was fresh snow both days.  The first day they had about an inch.  The second day they had about 3 inches, with more falling as the day progressed.

*Ski trails were frequently empty.  It was so peaceful.

*My rental ski boots fit the best of any ski boots I have ever worn.  *Ever*Ever*Ever!  Amazing.  No sore spots.  No bruises. (Sometimes I have been downright miserable.)

*I didn't take a single spill.  I came close, but always managed to pull it out at the last second!  (I guess my balance isn't quite as bad as I thought.)

*Finally, I bought a new pair of Adidas running shoes on the way home.  These shoes imitate running barefoot. (No, they don't look like gloves!)  We'll see how I feel about them after a couple of runs.  (I hate breaking in new shoes!)

The last ski trip was dreadful.  This one was absolutely perfect.  I feel like someone was looking out for me--I mean, besides the Mr.  (He was a good sport to agree to another ski trip, especially since he doesn't ski.  He toted lunch, waited patiently for me to arrive at the bottom of the slope, and bought hot chocolate.  In other words--he took good care of me.  He is the best!!)

"I lift up mine eyes to the hills, from whence cometh my help..."  I'm pretty sure He had a hand in how pleasant this trip was, too!

A Change or Two

Forget the yellow ski jacket.  It is supposed to be 50 degrees today on slope.  I guess spring has come to the mountains, at least for a day.  Hope it isn't like skiing in a snow cone.  I think a wind breaker will suffice by afternoon.

Tomorrow there is a 60% chance of snow and a high of 37...  and we're back to winter!  I'm guessing my yellow ski jacket will get a workout then.

Since it is too early to post ski pictures yet, I will share a couple of pictures of Baxter.
If you're wondering what he is doing behind the wheel, I'll tell you:  He thinks he is driving!
Yep.  So where is he going?  Well, the joke's on him; he's driving himself to the critter sitter's house.  And I'm sure there will be paybacks when we arrive home.

It's Electrifying...

Bax isn't the only one suffering from this condition on Easy Street.  It seems to be going around.  (And it doesn't look nearly so cute on me.)

Snow Day #3

No school again today.  I have no idea how much snow we have.  It has blown around so much that it is tough to tell.  My guess is somewhere between 4 and 7 inches.  A sheet of ice is under the drifts.  The windchill in Tiny Town yesterday was minus 33.  So...

This was Easy Street.

Bax brought in the paper before it got too deep.
Without his two walks a day (we can't stand up), Baxter has been a bit hyper in the evening.  And then we can't stand him! Yesterday, he had a fun surprise.

Like his waiting place?
He knew he heard something.
He's a patient little thing.

And then he spies the door opening...
The Mr. brought K and Khalie across town to spend the afternoon.  There was a lot of yipping and sniffing when the two old friends saw each other.   Khalie ate Baxter's food.  Baxter teased Khalie with rawhide chews.  Khalie managed to drag out of all of Baxter's "toys."
They ran and chased and played.  Khalie kept batting Bax down when he was a little too rambunctious.  Baxter kept jumping up on the couch so he could look Khalie in the eye or paw her on the face.  Bax also liked to squeeze behind furniture where Khalie couldn't get to him.  (It pays to be little!) He'd taunt her from back there.  *sigh*
They are an unlikely duo.  Khalie surely gets annoyed, but tolerates the little runt.  Both dogs were pooped at the end of the day.  After supper, the Mr. took K and Khalie home.  K called later to say Khalie was sleeping soundly.  And Baxter was a much calmer dog, dozing on the floor most of the evening.

Mission accomplished!
I'm really not sure what I am doing today.  There are several jobs I need to get done, but somehow snow days seem meant for fun and laziness.  If the wind would die down a bit, I'd be tempted to venture a little further from the house with my camera.

We'll see what the day brings.

Dog House

With that title, the Mr. will think this post is about him.  Not this time, though he sometimes finds himself there--and probably has good reason to be there now.  (That cold, with all the snoring that accompanies it, is going to have to go!)

Actually, it won't come as a shock to know that Baxter is in the dog house.  And since we don't own a dog house, he's in the metaphorical one.  He's been in big trouble lately.

We've had a Baxter Bomb go off in the house.  (K's word.)  I call it Baxtergeddon.

Baxtergeddon occurred on Martin Luther King day. The girls didn't have school.  Tiny Town High had an inservice.  I wasn't two hours into the inservice when the secretary came down to tell me that the Mr. was on the way to get me.  They had called him at work to tell him that his mom was really bad.  (She died that evening.)

On the trip to the Nursing Home with the Mr., I called and asked K to take Baxter out sometime during the day.

When she arrived at our house, Baxter greeted her at the front door--tail a wagging.  That was surprise #1.  Baxter is penned in our utility room when we aren't home.  Uh oh!

K took one look at our living room and knew that Mr. B had been quite busy. She said it looked like a Baxter bomb had gone off. Everything that had been on the couch had been gone through and was now strung all over the room.  Surprise #2.

What was on the couch?

*My purse.  I never take my purse to school.  I transfer my wallet or checkbook into my messenger bag if I think I am going to need them, but I don't usually need my purse.  On this particular day, I had taken my wallet- thank goodness!

*A shopping bag with part of L's birthday gift.

*Two photo calendars for K and L.  These were sent by my little sister.  The calendars have all the family birthdays and anniversaries. All the photos were taken by my sister.

The damage?  Baxter ate two ink pens, a tube of lip gloss, a small pack of Kleenexes and had started on a purse sized hand lotion.  Every receipt in my purse was scattered everywhere.  My checkbook was intact.  Thankfully, my purse was unscathed, too.  (He usually loves to chew on anything leather or fabric.)

The gift for L was fine.  One calendar was not.  He had chewed the wire and part of the card stock pages.  Argh!!  Luckily, the other was untouched.  I think K arrived before he could start in on that one.

When K called about the Baxter bomb, I told her to check the rest of the house.  (Usually, no trash can is safe.)  Besides the knocked over gate to his pen, all she found was an old Pentax camera pulled from under my bed.  Instead of under the bed, it was now on top of it.  How he managed that, I'll never know.

Yes, he was in big trouble.

Two days later the Mr. was sure Baxter would behave while we ran a quick errand.  He didn't shut Bax in the utility room, but left him confined to the kitchen and family room.  (That's his usual roaming area when we are home.)  The remote (already had replaced the first one he ate) and phones were out of Baxter reach. "What could possibly happen??!!" Yeah, the Mr. had to eat those words.

We arrived home to a coffee table tablecloth pulled all the way off the table.  The lamp was leaning at an odd angle. The two glasses and coasters that had been on the table were now on the floor.  One glass was broken.  I reminded the Mr. that this was his brilliant idea.

Yes, Baxter was in trouble again.  He's been rather bratty lately.  I think the lack of attention during the last week might have something to do with it.  *sigh*

Mr. B has spent the last week and a half in the dog house.  And the Mr. will tell you that I am in the dog house, too:  after all, it was my idea to get a dog!

All I can say is-- it is getting rather crowded in here.

Signing off from Easy Street's dog house.  No vacancies at this time.

The Mailman Delivers

I rarely get the mail at our house; the Mr. gets it on his lunch break.  He brings in a lot of bills.  I got the mail yesterday, and yippee skippy--I should do it more often.

Look what was waiting in the mailbox when I picked up the mail!
Yes indeed!!  There was a package for Baxter from Rusty, Sophie and Opie, all dogs of my crazy cousin Ree!  Baxter and I were so excited to open it.
Who knew we could be so spoiled?  There was a lovely letter from the pooches, too!
Baxter's loot was a Kong and a Kong treat; a favorite of Rusty, Sophie, and Opie.  (They've obviously been reading my blog and knew Mr. B is hard on toys!)  But they sent something for the humans in our house, too:
There were two peanut butter scoops (a scoop of peanut butter dipped in caramel, rolled in peanuts and then dipped in chocolate!); only one is picture here.  (I'm not sure why that is! Wink, wink!) Then there was some pumpkin fudge from the last batch of the season in Ree's local candy store,  and...a big bag of chocolate covered espresso beans.  I was introduced to those last fall, courtesy of Crazy Cousin Ree, too.  Yum!!  Yum!!  And Yum-O!! (I'm not sure it is possible to go wrong with chocolate AND coffee!!)

Baxter was quite delighted with his gift!
He chomped and chewed for almost two hours in that prone position, hardly budging--and the kong is still intact!!  Crazy Cousin Ree sent an indestructible toy!  Bless.Her.Heart!!  I mean, thank you Rusty, Sophie, and Opie!! And anything that can hold his attention for longer than ten minutes is nothing short of a miracle.

Last night I felt a bit like Baxter, sprawling on the floor in these pictures.  A peanut butter scoop, some espresso beans, and a piece (or two) of pumpkin fudge can leave a girl lolling about! I couldn't budge either! Yes, a two mile run is in order for this morning!

Thank you Crazy Cousin Ree!  You are the best.  (And the Mr. says if you keep sending those peanut butter scoops, he might have to plan a vacation to the East Coast just to see you!  They are to die for!!)  Hugs and Love from Easy Street!  (Baxter sends a few sniffings, too!)

Quite A Christmas

Baxter had quite a Christmas.  He destroyed both toys from Santa in less than half a day.  The red plastic candy cane didn't stand a chance.  He chewed the end off of it in about 20 minutes.

Then that goofy Mrs. Santa also had Santa deliver a red and green Christmas slipper toy.  It was stuffed.  It was cute.  And it brought about an hour of enjoyment before Baxter had torn a hole in it and started pulling out the stuffing.  You might think we were through at this point, but no...
That slipper provided hours of tug-of-war fun for Khalie and Baxter.  One would get it and taunt the other with it.  The little one was as bad as the big one.  They went round and round.  It was actually quite comical.

And Baxter was so sad when Khalie went home.  Exhausted, but sad!

So now we are on the hunt for the next "indestructible" toy.  So far, nothing lasts long.  I don't think they make cast iron dog chews.  I've said it before, I'll say it again:  It's a good thing he's cute!

Baxter Baby

I haven't updated on our dog lately.  The Mr. would tell you it is a good thing he is cute; otherwise, he would be a pound puppy or a pounded puppy.

Bax does push the limits of our love once in awhile.  He has eaten a remote, two ink pens, and the earbuds to my ipod.  He's destroyed his stuffed animal lamb, his chew toy "Pork" the porcupine, his puppy bed, and has torn into his big dog bed, too.  He eats the stuffing.  He eats kleenex.  He carries leaves, trash, and wood chips in his mouth.  The real topper?  He has torn a foot long snag in our fairly new family room carpet.  *sigh* Oh yeah, and he gnaws on chair legs, too.

All that and he is a quick little thing.  He can jump up and rip a kleenex or napkin out of your hand in the blink of an eye. He nips fingers.  Yeah, he is a pain.

But....
He is adorable.  He is also gradually calming down.  He jumps up in my lap and snuggles.  (Just in time with these cold temperatures!)  A month ago he wouldn't sit down for longer than a minute or two, and now he will spend a half hour or so snoozing in my lap.

Baxter has also become a pro at getting the paper.  He waits eagerly for the paper lady to arrive in the morning.  As soon as he hears the car, he yips.  We open the door, he runs down the steps, and returns lugging the paper.  He runs straight into the family room and drops it, waiting for his treat.  The Sunday paper is bigger than he is, but he still insists on hauling it in.  My favorite is when he is mistaken and the paper isn't there.  He runs down the steps and then screeches to a halt.  He looks so dejected when he returns to the house with nothing.

For all his naughty habits, Baxter has learned to sleep in until we get up.  He is housebroken so well that if he gets sick in the middle of the night, he will bark to be taken out instead of having an accident inside.

The dog is solid muscle.  He walks about three miles a day.  Our vet said it is too bad he isn't a purebred so he could be a showdog.  She is pretty impressed by the strong little thing.

Mr. B is 11 months old now.  If he keeps calming down, we are going to have a great little house dog.  But that is only if he survives that long.

Yeah, I'm shopping for wood laminate floors for the family room.  And we're hoping Santa brings Baxter some new chew toys.  Anything in cast iron could probably survive.

And for all his complaining, who is Mr. B's favorite lap?  The Mr.'s.  Bax isn't stupid.  He has to stay on the Mr.'s good side, so he doesn't end up at an animal shelter.  I know that the Mr. is a soft touch.  Baxter knows it too, so those boys stick together these days.

Baxter might be my dog, but he is as charmed by the Mr. as I am.  Bax and I know who takes good care of us!

Falling Backward

I used to look forward to the end of Daylight Savings Time.  Well, it was actually the extra hour of sleep that appealed to me.

This year, falling backward reminds me a bit of when the girls were little.  The clocks may change, but the internal clocks were still on their regular time.  The time change always meant gradually trying to rearrange the little one's schedules.  We kept them up a bit later and tried to hold off feeding times.  Eventually, their schedule matched the clock again.

I'm pretty sure Baxter missed the memo on the time change.  He still gets up at his ungodly hour of 5:00, only now it is 4:00.  Yep, this is fun.

So to all of you parents of little ones--I am feeling your pain.  Puppies and babies, who knew they had so much in common?

When it grows dark so early in the evening, the holidays can't be far behind. Bring on the turkey, pumpkin pie, Macy's Day parade, and Christmas lights.

And the biggest perk of falling back:  the sun is up when I open the door of my classroom at Trailer High.  No more fumbling with my keys in the dark.  Now maybe my students will actually be awake for 1st hour!
